Emiel Boersma and Joppe Paulides
Emiel Boersma (1980) has been a professional beach volleyball player since 2002. He has taken part in some 50 World Tours and together with Bram Ronnes took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing as well as finishing in the top 10 in World Tour Grand Slams on no less than four occasions. From January 2009, he has been working with his new partner Joppe Paulides (1982), former indoor international with 150 caps.
Emiel Boersma and Joppe Paulides have known one another since the national C-team, and also played together in the Talent Team 18. While Emiel developed his game on the beach, Joppe as an indoor player scored 150 caps and played for 7 years in the premier league, with various top teams in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.
Emiel has asked Joppe on several occasions to switch to beach volleyball, and when his team, Omniworld, was wound up following bankruptcy at the start of 2009, Joppe made the move.
The training period in Rio in February 2009 was a baptism of fire for Joppe. He had occasionally played beach volleyball, but never at a serious level. The first training sessions were tough. With just two players, you must keep going, with each ball exchange followed immediately be another. Periods of rest common in the indoor game are rare, and the wind and heavy sand do not make life easier.
For the coming season, Emiel Boersma and Joppe Paulides are qualified for world tour events, on the strength of Emiel’s ranking position, but they will have to prove their ability.
With the arrival of Joppe, a real net specialist, the role of Emiel will become more that of a defensive player. As an extremely technical player this is a skill he certainly possesses, but according to his trainers, there is still room for improvement over the coming period.
Measuring 2.06 and 2.04 metres, respectively, Emiel and Joppe are the tallest beach volleyball team in the world elite. In Rio de Janeiro, the two tall men stood out in the busy shopping streets. From below they were constantly assailed with the question, ‘Hey, you beach volleyball?’ And each time, the men replied with a friendly nod. Professionals through and through, also as ambassadors for their sport.
