Floris Jan Bovelander
Former hockey player Floris Jan Bovelander was above all renowned for his devastating penalty corners. In his 241 international matches, he scored no less than 215 goals for the Dutch team. As a player at Bloemendaal, he won the Dutch national championships six times, the indoor championships once and the European cup on one occasion. With a total of 276 goals, still today he is all-time top scorer in the Dutch Hockey Premier League.
Bovelander also achieved considerable success with the Dutch National Team. In 1987, in Moscow, he became European champion, followed three years later by a world title for the Dutch team in Lahore (Pakistan). In Lahore, host country Pakistan was beaten with a 3-1 score in a packed stadium (70,000 spectators). Partly thanks to two goals from Bovelander.
Bovelander took part in three Olympic Games. He won bronze in Seoul (1988), came fourth in Barcelona (1992) and achieved his sporting highpoint in 1996 in Atlanta, where he and the team won the much sought-after Olympic gold.
After his hockey career, the biology graduate founded an event service, together with his brother Jeroen: Bovelander & Bovelander. They organise sporting events and are major players in youth events organisation, including hockey camps and clinics. Together with This is Golf, he launched 'Hockey Weekly', the free Dutch hockey newspaper. He also regularly gives commercial presentations and writes columns for various publications including the daily newspaper 'De Pers'.
