Korie Homan and Esther Vergeer win Wimbledon

06 July 2009 - Korie Homan and Esther Vergeer wrote history by winning the first ladies’ wheelchair tournament at Wimbledon.

Because this tennis tournament, rich in tradition, is played on grass, it was long believed that it would not be possible for wheelchair tennis players to take part in the tournament.

Due to the soft surface the singles game proved too difficult for wheelchair players, but a doubles tournament was staged. Women were allowed to participate this year, for the first time.

At the wheelchair tournament in Wimbledon, the world’s four top pairs played for the grand slam title. Korie Homan and Esther Vergeer won 6-0, 6-0 against Sharon Walraven and Katharina Kruger from Germany. This qualified them for the final that was played against Daniela Di Toro and Lucy Shuker.

Homan and Vergeer won the final 6-1, 6-3 in just 54 minutes.
