Is Plantina Vitamin B12 not far too highly dosed?
Plantina Vitamin B12 contains 1000 μg (microgram) of vitamin B12 in every tablet. This equates to 400 times the Recommended Daily Amount (RDA).
As we become older, high doses of vitamin B12 can be useful, above all because vitamin B12 is increasingly poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has been unable to identify any negative consequences of vitamin B12, even in very high doses.
Why take such a high dose of vitamin B12?
There are situations in which such high doses can be valuable, above all when absorption of B12 via the gastrointestinal tract is less efficient. Such circumstances above all arise as we become older.
Should vitamin B12 not be in lozenge form, to improve absorption?
The absorption of vitamin B12 depends heavily on the intrinsic factor, a substance that is secreted by the stomach. With high doses of vitamin B12, the intrinsic factor plays a far less important role. Absorption via the intestine then depends on the dose. Also, some people find lozenges unpleasant.
Is Plantina Vitamin B12 suitable for vegetarians?
Vitamin B12 only occurs naturally in products of animal origin. The only exceptions are certain supplements that are also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Plantina vitamin B12 is one such food supplement.
